The NIH HEAL Initiative® is committed to an accelerated research timeline and maximal transparency based upon the urgency of the opioid crisis. Initiative research is funded by NIH Institutes and Centers. Research results are shared immediately and broadly, according to the HEAL Public Access and Data Sharing Policy.

NIH HEAL Initiative 2024 Annual Report
As the NIH HEAL Initiative enters its sixth year, its expansive research portfolio represents an unprecedented commitment to advancing science through more than 1,800 projects in all 50 states. This past year saw some noteworthy accomplishments with direct implications for policy and practice:
- The newly launched Harm Reduction Research Network, which will study innovative ways of expanding the reach of life-saving measures through mobile vans, tools delivered via smartphones, and other means.
- Five new Investigational New Drug applications submitted, and another five cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and one active investigational device exemption that allows an experimental technology to be tested in people.
- A new HEAL program aiming to find pain management interventions that work for rural populations, leveraging infrastructure from existing HEAL clinical research.
- Efforts driven by the imperative to ensure inclusive and culturally competent research that can bridge gaps in care.
